Have you installed another graphics card driver like the proprietary
nvidia one? If so, you'll need to create a minimal xorg.conf to get
the driver loaded and X working. Here's mine:
# minimal xorg.conf for prop. nvidia driver
#Section "Module"
# Load "glx"
#EndSection
Section "Device"
Identifier "EVGA GeForce 8400GS"
Driver "nvidia"
EndSection
Put it in /etc/X11
