Try to uninstall nvidia packages, then try again and reinstall nvidia packages.
If you get in trouble with 32-bit graphical applications like googleearth, I suggest not to use the nvidia packages, but the nvidia-installer from nvidia's site. However, if you do so, do not forget to purge debian nvidia-packages during uninstall. Good luck!
