I used gnome for a time as well and wouldn't you know it, they changed the whole desktop too! Both kde and gnome made changes I just didn't like so now I use xfce and am quite happy with it. I don't know why the Debian 7 GNU/kFreeBSD disks are using xfce by default since I have never used it.
