What does it mean, that you "now have no desktop"? Doesn't start X? Doesn't start the display manager? Doesn't start the desktop environment? Is there any output or any information by a log file, e.g. is there a ~/.xsession-errors and if so, then what's the date of it and what's it content? Did you already do Internet inquiries yourself, e.g. did you google for "how to find out if something is installed on my debian", without the quotation marks? IOW why don't you know if it's installed or not? Please reply to the mailing list only and provide more information.
