That should have said WITHOUT looking up U+xxx, etc. Compose will do
ä, á, à and similar vowels, lower and upper case, č, ç, £ ¢ ¥ ñ

AND I just discovered, the control key will do those macrons!
ā ē ī ō ū (Compose vowel hyphen) but apparently not upper case versions.
