Spoke too soon: it worked one time but that is all :-( After that the
same fall back into the initramfs shell.
This problem is described in
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=707286 and the solution
described therein works! This got me going for a couple of weeks...
