Something similar happened to me many a moon ago, and it was due to the
fact that I had inadvertently turned on "Allow to control the pointer
using the keyboard" in

System - Preferences - Keyboard - Mouse Keys

(Gnome)

I turned off what I'd accidentally turned on (you may be wondering how I
fortuitously turned on such a functionality, buried as it is deep in a
configuration menu, but I managed to do it with a series of not very
felicitous keyboard combinations while editing a file or playing Bzflag
or something.)
