Before you continue, boot into a live Linux from CD or DVD and backup
your Debian.
As root
cd /mountpoint/of/debian
tar czf /mountpoint/for/backup/debian_backup.bak.tar.gz *
If the root directory should contain .dot_files
tar czf /mountpoint/for/backup/partition/debian_backup.bak.tar.gz * .dot_file_a
.dot_file_n
From time to time check
sudo smartctl -a /dev/sd?
Replace the ? with the drive letter.
After you heard the click noise, take a look, if there e.g. were spin
downs and spin ups.
I have separate partition for my home directory. Thus, if something
happens to root directory, I may still be able to reach my personal data.
Because I have separate / and /home partitions, should I check both of
them or just the / partition?
