Hi,

under /dev/md/* are symlinks to /dev/md*. Do you have a folder /dev/md/?
What says mdadm --detail --scan & mdadm --examine --scan

These commands dont't edit the mdadm.conf unless you redirect the output
to the mdadm.conf file.
