Thanks for the reply Ralph. I tried what you suggested before resorting to latest hplip and it worked fine but I was hoping for more native support. The latest hplip package gives me everything but I feel like I am introducing an alien into my laptop because it hasn't gone through Debian stable scrubbing process. :)
If all else fails and my desire to keep Debian as close to stable as possible takes over, I may resort to doing what you suggested but I wish there was a way to figure out what's preventing scanning from working even though it's fully supported on paper with wheezy. On my wheezy system with HP Officejet 6600, which should be very similar to your 6500, I only use the web interface to scan. I have not yet found a need to try the hplip package although it should permit more extensive access to device features. For example, the web interface only allows scans up to 600 dpi while 1200 dpi is available on the device. With your browser, go to your device at 192.168.whatever-it's-called, click on Scan tab to see all the scanning options and manage the scan. For printing, I used CUPS, browsed to http://localhost:631/ , had CUPS find the wireless printer and add it as a system printer. This was so simple and easy, I never looked at the hplip options although the package is installed.
