This:

> dpkg --search /usr/bin/vmtoolsd
> dpkg-query: no path found matching pattern /usr/bin/vmtoolsd

equals to 'no package owns /usr/bin/vmtoolsd'.
'open-vm-tools' package owns /usr/bin/vmtoolsd file.

If open-vm-tools is installed - 'dpkg -S' would find it.
