So if the OP (Tim) doesn't need to get that output from getcap it should be reset:- # setcap cap_net_raw+p `which ping` NOTE: I haven't tested that as I'm not running unstable, adding the -v parameter will give much more information about the outcome. There still remains the problem of why does it stop working. Bugreport?
