I think I might have found the problem.. $TZ was unset.. Dunno how/why.. 
Added a "export TZ='PST8PDT" to /etc/profile and the problem is gone... 
I'd completely forgotten about the TZ variable... Thanks for the reboot 
of my brain, everybody!!
