Geez. 28 years now and the only trouble I've had with running daemons via 
inittab would be when I broke something and the program would try to restart 
too fast. Init ensures (to a reasonble degree) that programs always run. And 
if init stopped, the computer has much bigger problems than a daemon not 
running.
