Unfortunately, $HOME is used both for data you generate, and config the computer generates. The former shouldn't be touched, the latter should. Also, it's amazing how much garbage is accumulated in the /home/you tree. So what I do is back up $HOME, do a fresh install for a clean, empty new $HOME, and as I find needed files in the old home directory, I put them in my new $HOME. If, after 6 months, I haven't needed a file, it's unnecessary, and I re-use the backup disk space. By the way, for Steve-Litt-created data I really need, I make sure to put it in either the /d (stands for data) or /s (stands for Steve) tree on this one user desktop computer. That way, there's no possibility of mixing computer generated stuff with me generated data.
