You can use apt with packages which are in the repositories. You can find this out with <aptitude search> or equivalent or by looking on https://www.debian.org/distrib/packages If you want something which is not in the repositories you have to compile it. It makes a difference which repositories you have available. See: /etc/apt/sorces.list Use cat or an editor.
