Mistake! The 8.8.8.8 isn't needed. That's a test of Internet connectivity, when what I wanted was to test LAN connectivity, which in my case is my firewall at 192.168.100.96. You can safely remove the 8.8.8.8. Obviously :-) Thanks for catching that.
