I have a compaq armada e 500 running very fine, but I guess you might
have a problem with the framebuffer console (that is the driver,
displaying the penguin in the upper left corner, when you boot).

Try booting with the parameter vga=normal or vga=791, and see if it
solves your problem. If it does, add it to your /etc/lilo.conf (or what
boot loader you are using), and run /sbin/lilo.
