DM = display manager

On Ubuntu, lightdm is the default DM.

DE = desktop environment; in your case XFCE

You can check that the basic functionality of X is OK with
xinit /usr/bin/xterm -- /usr/bin/X :0 -nolisten tcp vt01
(assuming that you're on tty1 when launching X)

Otherwise, you can start X with
xinit [...]
startx [...]
service lightdm [re]start
