I tried that too, same failure, but I did find it, by doing something I haven't had to do in years, install alsamixer and its gui, which showed that it had all turned itself off. Turned it up, works. Found the keyboard volume control didn't work until I had quit the alsamixer, they fought tooth and nail for control when the mixer was running.
