I understood as follows:
The applets disappears in gnome3 (no alt-right_mouse_button menu).
Gnome3 uses extensions instead of applets.
Extensions can be installed trought pacakge or browser (enabling plugins)
There are similar extensions to the old applets.
The Jessie package gnome-applets led me to make mistakes.
