I was asking about networkmangler because it occurred to me that the problem the OP has is typical of a networkmangler problem - but it can't be that if he hasn't got network mangler installed. Hence asking if it is running. wicd is indeed much better and: # aptitude purge networkmanager && aptitude install wicd is a command well established in my arsenal.
