And the difference is? By default it cannot be done. You need someone who knows your exact set-up to tell you the workaraound. In KDE it is kdesu and in Gnome it is gksu (I think). But from a GUI. Here is my attempt to run a graphical program as root from a console on my Wheezy desktop: lisi@Tux-II:~$ su Password: root@Tux-II:/home/lisi# iceweasel No protocol specified No protocol specified Error: cannot open display: :0 root@Tux-II:/home/lisi# su lisi lisi@Tux-II:~$ iceweasel And it launched.
