I have it working fine here. I'm using j2sdk1.4.2 dropped in /usr/local
with a symlink /usr/local/jdk pointing to it and a /usr/local/jre
symlink pointing to /usr/local/jdk/jre (both symlinks are to ease
switching to newer Java versions). Then I have a symlink in my Firebird
plugins directory to
/usr/local/jre/plugin/i386/ns610-gcc32/libjavaplugin_oji.so

I'm using the Firebird nightlys, current running version is:

Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.6b) Gecko/20031109
Firebird/0.7+
