Thinking about it, our scanner is fifteen years old, so if yours is similar, that's not too bad. Might be worth opening it up to see if a connector has fallen off. One thing it isn't is fast, as it's USB-powered, and I did look into getting a quicker one a few years ago. But everyone has all-in-one printers nowadays, and the remaining scanners are mostly somewhat specialised and quite expensive. There is a reasonably-priced LiDE 120, but it appears it is not yet supported by SANE, and neither are the cheaper HPs. All the cheaper ones look to be USB-powered.
