Please update that BIOS.  It is too old (and no, I am *not* joking).

People, as a rule of thumb: if it has an Intel Skylake processor or newer
(6th gen Core, for example), consider updating the BIOS *first* should you
get any sort of crash, kernel oops, or other really weird behavior.

Unfortunately, there is a good chance the firmware update won't fix this
particular problem.  But it will fix a few others that cause unpredictable
behavior.
