No, the way to avoid the flamewars is for you to be less selfish and have them somewhere else where they might actually be approximately on-topic. This is *debian-user*, so please keep threads here at least vaguely related to Debian. It's clear that the thread leading up to here no longer has anything to do with Debian and no longer makes any sense on this mailing list; it would fit better on somebody's blog or a Usenet politics group or something, not here. I'm definitely not giving up mutt for reading Debian mailing lists; it's the only way I manage to get through as many posts as I do, and it keeps my reading of debian-user consistent with the two dozen or so other Debian mailing lists I'm subscribed to. I know NNTP patches exist, but that involves a lot more setup and would require me to keep a locally-patched version of mutt. If you have a problem with what I'm saying, please consider following up by private mail. I've got no interest in having a flamewar about the flamewar and compounding the problem.
