I advised Gene to put "-quotes around variable evaluations. Now we have the educational example why this is best practice. Currently i expect the next insight to arise when Gene describes his shell code which derives the variable content from the output of inotifywait(1). (Describing the own software to others is often a good way to find the wrong assumptions and mental short circuits which cause the software to behave in an undesired way.
