Probably you need to add the following lines in the top of /etc/apt/apt.conf.d/50unattended-upgrades file (or some other file in the same directory). APT::Periodic::Update-Package-Lists "1"; APT::Periodic::Unattended-Upgrade "1"; APT::Periodic::CleanInterval "1"; Systemd timer and service apt-daily.{timer,service} runs daily but if a laptop is on battery power the service unit doesn't do anything.
