This might not interact well with "Desktop environments" (i.e. Gnome, KDE and derivatives, and perhaps to a lesser extent XFCE). As far as I remember, those tend to cover the X root with an own window and play other funny games, so backgrounds (and screen savers) become less obvious as under the simpler arrangement "X + window manager". But things may have improved since then.
