I tried pavucontrol but still no sound.
I concluded there must be a conflict between also and pulseaudio so I
purged pulseaudio. This did not help.
I switched the line out cable to the onboard sound card. With alsamixer
set to the onboard sound card there sound and the volume can be
controlled with the master/front control.
With the line out cable connected to the xonar card and the alsamixer
set to the xonar card there is no sound. With pulseaudio purged there is
no signal monitor but before its deletion pavucontrol showed the xonar
connection and its signal monitor showed a strong signal.
Conclusion: Alsamixer shows volume settings for each sound card but does
not switch to the output stream of the card, this remains the stream
from the onboard audio regardless of the alsamixer sound card selection.
There must be another setting switch the output stream.
I also wish alsa had a signal strength monitor. Maybe I should reinstall
pulseaudio.
