Here's what I get when I try:

        p3a:/home/roger# dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86
        /usr/sbin/dpkg-reconfigure: xserver-xfree86 is not fully installed
        p3a:/home/roger#


Aha. Try:


dpkg --configure xserver-xfree86


Negative. Problem is he's using the vesa xserver so you're going to want to use


dpkg-reconfigure xserver-vesa

or apt-get install xserver-xfree86 and then reconfigure it.
but you're using xfree 3 and not xfree 4. if it works stick with it.
