I agree that there is a real risk of problems lurking, especially in the 
bigger desktop environments which most heavily lean on mechanisms 
invented and far more strongly battle-tested in systemd-based packages.

But that is a more general note. And more vague.  Addressing only the 
later questions in your bundle above, Roger.

Specifically for having systemd-shim lying around on a system, things 
are more clear: It is bad! Make sure to replace it with logind.  For
