The relevant code apparently exists in the greeter app (or whatever it's
called) I use (lightdm):

 src/session.c:

 priv->log_filename = g_strdup (".xsession-errors");

 src/log-file.c:

 old_filename = g_strdup_printf ("%s.old", log_filename);
