There is a more subtle problem here. Most USB flash disks will freeze
when blanking flash pages, that makes the whole system unresponsive.

A live distribution plus persistence is optimized to make a lot fewer
writes than a normal system, by mounting tmpfs over some variable disks,
and by not updating atime on the bulk of the system.
