Linux always felt larger than merely another OS, whether Debian or other.
IMO that's because of the free-software movement's stated social goals and
because of the broad cooperation needed to make the software. Yet the
free-software movement is unknown to the humans who rely on Linux servers
as only infrastructure, and mostly ignored as a social movement even by
those who use Linux consciously or with economic intent.
