With ProtonMail I've only had trouble receiving automatic stuff like notifications[1]. Those are often similar enough to spam to be difficult to distinguish from actual spam. For one particular (in)famous social network I solved it by activating encrypted notifications[2]. [1] That I know of, of course. ;) [2] Was positively surprised to learn they offer this.
