because default vmware uses a SCSI disk for Harddrive. Sorry I forgot which type of controler, but it is not a very common one. To ship around, remove the SCSI stuff from the vmware configuration and add a IDE disk [vmware machine has to be "stopped" for this] if you want to keep the SCSI thing you have to boot with an SCSI enabled kernel that has this scsi controller driver as module or compiled in.
