Whereas those of us who use email see it as exactly the other way around, email is a simple protocol that isn't controlled by one private company, web-based services are dependent on one company and can be changed or withdrawn at will, particularly if free. If you don't like how your email and/or domain host does business, you can pick another without changing how you work.
