I am sure ... I ran it under strace and can see it reading the correct
characters.

That does not work:

~/.ssh$ ssh-keygen -y -f id_dsa
Enter passphrase:
Load key "id_dsa": incorrect passphrase supplied to decrypt private key

Same for id_rsa.

My passphrase is > 30 & < 40 characters long, upper/lower roman alphabetic +
spaces.
