By the way and very besides: 

Maybe I know a way, which might solve the issue.

If creating an ISO with bootcdwrite, then this can be cpied to an USB-stick, 
which then can be booted from, and after it you can restore the drives.

This ISO can be created during runtime. Yeah, not the best solution, but 
better than none.

I am using this for my KALI-computers.  
The only thing, which does not work, is using encrypted drives. You can create 
the ISO, but restore does not work (at least, I found no way for this).
