Just for kicks: have you tried removing (sudo rmmod psmouse) and then
re-inserting (sudo modprobe psmouse) the psmouse kernel module?

Should that help, then it would at least hint to something in the kernel
module (or in the firmware at the other side of the fence) getting out
of whack...
