Others have mentioned rippers and tools for managing this as part of the ripping process (abcde, etc)

I'd like to recommend "picard" as a tool just for cleaning up metadata. It interfaces with the MusicBrainz public database, which is probably the best data source for CD metadata now. "picard" is very useful for cleaning up files post-rip.
