GTK 4 requires Wayland. GTK 3 and earlier run on both Wayland
and X.

You can, but this is much more complex than installing a single
package.

Wayland is a completely different GUI from X11. Nominally, X
programs can run under Wayland with the XWayland bridge, but
many, many things will change.
