If you look at the top of a dpkg -l output (try "dpkg -l | less"), you'll notice that status "rc" means that the package was removed, but some configuration files were left. You can get rid of those configuration files with "dpkg -P bind". Also, when removing packages, you can use "apt-get remove --purge [package name]" to do this in one step.
