Thanks for your answer.

I've tryed it onto a vanilla 2.6.3 kernel with no luck.  Here's the output 
from dmesg:

usb 2-1: new full speed USB device using address 2
usb 2-1: device not accepting address 2, error -110
hub 2-0:1.0: Cannot enable port 1.  Maybe the USB cable is bad?
