I am using source code from UNIX SYSTEMS PROGRAMMING by Robbins &

Where does this option come from - its not in the man pages? Why is
it needed when using the Debian gcc and g++ packages?

30sec google search suggests it should perhaps be

-DGNU_SOURCE

Care to elaborate? A Google search for GNU_SOURCE turns up 1,680 hits for me, while _GNU_SOURCE is found 17,200 times.

follwed an answer in a news group archive
and i'm about to throw the 19yrs old cat across the room if she
