I agree on the waste of space thing, however:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ apt-cache search putty
vbox3 - voice response system for isdn4linux
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$

Seems there is no putty package in Woody, so you would have to compile 
it or get it from somewhere else.
