usb storage devices

how do you know where the usb storage device is in the /dev/ directory?

syslog says:

hub.c: USB new device connect on bus2/1, assigned device number 3
...
USB Mass Storage device found at 3
No clue what this means in terms /dev/hdxy devices or /dev/usb/ devices.

Is this something I can hotplug to mount?
