I met this error message a few days ago when I updated my kernel to version 2.6.4 and replaced the APM with ACPI. Because I didn't have enough time to learn how to make ACPI running as expected, I installed the "sleepd" program on my Debian Sid. Then the "FATAL: error inserting apm" came out.
Neraly the same here ... it cam with an Upgrade which also upgraded from 2.6.whatever to 2.6.4-1-k7.
It seems that from 2.6.4. acpi is properly recognized ... until then acpi was not working I had the apm module loaded.
But I dont have sleepd installed at all, so it cannot be the same cause. What displaymanager are you using? I use gdm maybe somehting connected to that?
After I grepped in the "/var/log/syslog" I found this error message was generated by "sleepd", so I removed it from my Debian box and the error message dispeared. :)
I have not foudn anything about the error in /var/log/syslog nor in any other logfile under /var/log. The only thing I see is:
Apr 10 07:56:23 ds9 kernel: apm: BIOS version 1.2 Flags 0x03 (Driver version 1.16ac) Apr 10 07:56:23 ds9 kernel: apm: overridden by ACPI.
Hope my experenice is kinda helpful to you. :)
Sadly this was not the case but worth a try anyways. Thanks!
Christian
P.S. I just tried switching from gdm to xdm but the problem remeins - so there has to be an other reason. :-(
